VIRTUE’S HOUSEHOLD PHYSICIAN – A TWENTIETH CENTURY MEDICAA Practical Description in Plain Language of All the Diseases of Men, Women and Children Quite the compendium! From England, these four volumes, “by a corps of eminent specialists, practising physicians and surgeons”, represent the cutting edge in medical therapeutics in the late 1920’s. Topics include Anatomy, Hygiene, Management of the Sick and Labour Rooms, Homeopathic Remedies, Medicines and Their Preparations, Childbirth, the latest Shingle hairdos and much more. The two “Manikins” ( see pics) are stunning: multi-layered, complete and in excellent condition. The medical advise from 100 years ago , before the advent of antibiotics, is eye-opening. Some sections are a bit odd- the section on how to ensure either a male or a female child for example advises the woman desiring a male child to “pass the time with females older than herself.” Those wanting a female child should live mostly on pasta and “sleep as much as possible.” ABOUT USWe are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
