It traces the history of the area from its early settlement. One third of the volume is a detailed narrative of Wilmington during the War and of blockade running as seen by one who served on a blockade runner. The author, James Sprunt, went to sea at the age of seventeen on the blockade runner Lillian. The book is a facsimile reprint of the best edition, the second edition, which is revised and enlarged.
